Glaucoma refers to a group of eye disorders that result from a buildup of internal eye pressure. This can damage the eye's optic nerve that transmits visual information to the brain. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the United States, and an estimated 2.5 million Americans have the disease.
At first, Glaucoma gives no symptoms, but a comprehensive eye exam can detect it. Untreated or uncontrolled Glaucoma may eventually decrease the ability to see at the edge of your vision. This could then lead to blindness.
Glaucoma Screening and Diagnosis
In a routine eye exam, a tonometer is used to measure intraocular pressure, also known as IOP. Your eye typically is numbed with eye drops, and a small probe gently rests against your eye's surface. Other tonometers direct a puff of air onto your eye's surface.
When a person's IOP reading is abnormally high, it indicates a problem with the amount of fluid in the eye. Either the eye is not draining properly, or it is producing too much fluid.
