Can Drinking Coffee Help Your Vision?

To that end, we make it a point to stay on top of the latest medical finding relating to eye care and sight. So it was with great excitement that we heard about a new study linking coffee to eye health. The study conducted by Korean and American researchers found that coffee can help cure and prevent retinal degeneration. Coffee in its raw form has just 1% caffeine, and has as much as 7% to 9% chlorogenic acid. This is a strong antioxidant that improves eye health and functions and was shown help to prevent retinal degeneration in lab mice. This study was published in its entirety in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

To better understand how coffee impact retina health it is time for some basic human biology. The retina is a thin tissue layer that is located on the back wall of the eye. It is lined with millions of light-sensitive cells along with nerve cells that are responsible for the receiving and organizing of all visual information sent to and from the brain. It is one of the most metabolically active tissues and needs constant and high levels of oxygen. The lack of oxygen and pother damage that occurs over time leads to tissue damage and vision impairment and loss. Retinal degeneration is a common side effect to conditions such as aging, eye injury, glaucoma, and diabetes.

According to a report by USA Today, the study is “important in understanding functional foods, that is, natural foods that provide beneficial health effects,” Chang Lee, professor of food science and the study’s senior author, said in a statement. “Coffee is the most popular drink in the world, and we are understanding what benefit we can get from that.”

Previous studies have been conducted on the potential health benefits of coffee consumption and several have shown that coffee may actually help to cut the risk of diseases like Parkinson’s, several types of cancer, type I and II diabetes, Alzheimer’s and cognitive decline due to ageing.However, what is not known is whether drinking coffee will deliver the chlorogenic acid directly to the retina in strong enough amounts to be a cure. Future studies are already being planned to try and discover how to get stronger concentrations of chlorogenicacid to the retina, and this could lead to the development of eye drops using coffee and chlorogenic acid or the development of a coffee brew made especially for eye and vision health.
