Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration involves the deterioration of the retina's central portion, which is the inner layer of the eye that records images we see and sends them to the brain for processing via the optic nerve. The macula, the retina's center, focuses central vision in the eye and controls our ability to process visual information.

While macular degeneration naturally occurs with old age, unhealthy lifestyle choices heighten your risk. Factors like smoking, being overweight, genetic predisposition, and exposure to blue light significantly contribute to the likelihood of getting diagnosed with this disease.

We conduct various macular tests to determine if you might be suffering from macular degeneration, and we will discuss your prognosis during your appointment.

Computer Vision

Computer Vision, a relatively new term in optometry, refers to eye problems resulting from the extended use of computers and digital screen electronics. While it can be temporary, sometimes computer vision can strain the eyes to a point where it permanently impacts your vision. An existing eye condition can worsen as the eyes try to adjust and focus on a computer screen, so take precautions if you spend long hours in front of a computer screen.

If you're experiencing symptoms like blurry vision, dry eyes, eye strain, headaches, and neck or back pain, try adjusting the lighting, posture, and distance from your computer screen. If computer vision symptoms persist, call us to schedule an appointment for a complete evaluation.

Myopia Control (Near & Farsightedness)

Nearsightedness, or myopia, can make seeing objects at a distance hard. If you are experiencing nearsightedness, we will prescribe corrective lenses like glasses or contact lenses. Following a thorough examination, we will determine the best prescription for you.

For any additional questions about myopia or to schedule an appointment, please get in touch with us today at (706) 324-2073!

Sports Vision

Sports Vision training encompasses high-level eye tracking, depth perception, and hand-eye coordination exercises. Many athletes practice these exercises to maintain their eye health in peak conditions.

We use various exercises and specific exams for Sports Vision testing. Both office and field tests can help determine how your eyes function beyond regular activity. We can tailor a program to strengthen your vision based on your activity level.

If you're interested in determining the best training method for you or want to schedule an appointment, please call us today at (706) 324-2073!

Diabetic Eye Care

At Eyewear Unlimited, we're committed to looking after your eyes, especially if you have diabetes.

Diabetes can impact more than just your blood sugar; it can also harm your eyes if not properly managed. Diabetic eye disease can lead to vision loss, hinder daily tasks, and even cause blindness.

As a person with diabetes, keeping a close eye on your vision is crucial. Seek help immediately if you experience blurry vision, spot flashing lights or dark spots, have trouble seeing peripherally, or feel any pain or pressure in your eyes.

People with diabetes often face more eye problems than non-diabetics and may develop certain conditions earlier. Common issues include cataracts and glaucoma, which can damage the optic nerve and lead to blindness. Nerve damage in the eyes is also possible.

We're here to help care for your eyes if you have diabetes. If you're having any vision problems or eye discomfort, we're ready to assist you promptly to prevent blindness.

If you have diabetes or are experiencing diabetes-related eye problems, feel free to contact us today at (706) 324-2073.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a collection of eye disorders resulting from an accumulation of internal eye pressure, which can harm the optic nerve that carries visual information to the brain. It's the second leading cause of blindness in the United States, with approximately 2.5 million Americans living with the disease.

Glaucoma often shows no initial symptoms, but a comprehensive eye exam can detect it. Untreated or unmanaged glaucoma can ultimately reduce peripheral vision, potentially leading to blindness.

Glaucoma Screening and Diagnosis

During a routine eye exam, we use a tonometer to measure intraocular pressure or IOP. We typically numb your eye with drops, and a small probe gently touches your eye's surface. Other tonometers send a puff of air onto your eye's surface.

Abnormally high IOP readings suggest an issue with the amount of fluid in the eye. Either the eye isn't draining correctly or producing too much liquid.

Hyperopia (Near & Farsightedness)

Hyperopia, or farsightedness, can make it challenging to see objects up close. If you're dealing with farsightedness, we'll prescribe corrective lenses like glasses or contact lenses. Following a comprehensive examination, we'll determine the best prescription for you.

If you have further questions about hyperopia or want to schedule an appointment, don't hesitate to contact us today at (706) 324-2073!

Dry Eye

At Eyewear Unlimited, we're proud to provide dry eye treatment for our patients.

Dry eye, also known as Ocular Surface Disease, can result from certain medications, aging, or as a symptom of systemic diseases like Sjogren's syndrome, Rheumatoid arthritis, or Lupus. If you have a mild case of dry eye, you might experience irritation, excessive tearing, fluctuating vision, or a burning sensation in your eyes. Untreated, dry eyes can damage eye tissue, scar corneas, and impair vision.

Treatment options depend on the severity. Although there's no cure for dry eyes, we can discuss various ways to alleviate your symptoms during your appointment.

If you have any questions about dry eye or want to schedule an appointment, please call us today at (706) 324-2073!

Contact Lens Exams

If you've only used glasses before and are considering contact lenses, you might be curious about the process. The first step to getting contact lenses is scheduling an appointment with our optometrist at Eyewear Unlimited in Columbus. Here's what you can expect during this session.

Your Eyes Will Be Checked for Difficulties

Our optometrist will comprehensively evaluate your eye health to identify any medical issues that need addressing before you can wear contact lenses. If we identify a problem, we'll recommend treatment or vision correction recommendations. Your eye health assessment includes noninvasive tests, like a vision screening, to determine your prescription strength.

During a contact lens exam, we'll also measure your eyes to ensure your contact lenses fit correctly and don't slide off your irises. You'll look into a device while our optometrist observes your eyes from the other side of the equipment.

You Will Be Provided With a Set of Contact Lenses

We'll provide you with a sample pair of contact lenses in your prescription strength to try on and take home. A staff member will instruct you on how to insert and remove the lenses and demonstrate how to clean and care for them to prevent eye issues or lens damage.

A Follow-up Appointment May Be Necessary

You might need a follow-up appointment if you're a first-time contact lens wearer. Our optometrist will ask about your vision with the lenses, how you care for them at home, and if you're experiencing any problems.

If you're experiencing eye dryness, you might need to reduce the hours you wear your lenses until you adjust. Lubricating eye drops can help prevent your eyes from drying out with lens use. If your vision isn't satisfactory, we may need to conduct another examination to check your vision strength.
